Allergy Alert!

by Molly Holschlag

Red stuffy nose, itchy eyes, wheezing, extra fatigue and discomfort? It's allergy season again, and this year's heaviest rains in the west and southwest are making it extra difficult for allergy suffers.

High amounts of pollen and mold in the environment cause our bodies to make large amounts of histamine, which creates the symptoms experienced by those with allergies.

A helpful combination of nutrients can help ease the suffering. Quercetin, a flavonoid, has been shown in numerous studies to stabilize mast cells and help reduce or block the release of histamine. Typically found in tea, wine, grapefruit, onions, apples, and broccoli, Quercetin is reported to unclog sinuses, ease bronchial constriction in asthma suffers, and reduce itching and skin eruptions as well as the discomfort of runny, itchy eyes.

Quercetin works best when combined with Bromelain, the pineapple enzyme which aids in the digestion and absorption of this nutrient. Adding Vitamin C;especially one that is combined with other bioflavonoids such as rutin and acerola—makes for an excellent anti-allergy regimen.

For best results, take up to 2,000 mg of Quercetin daily, preferably in divided doses. Most Quercetin supplements are already prepared with the appropriate amounts of Bromelain.

Here's to a more comfortable allergy season!
