Positive relationship between sleep problems and thalamic size in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – Source: American Psychosomatic Society 65th Annual Meeting, May 2007
The thalamus (a right & left pair of brain structures) is associated with sleep regulation. Greater total thalamic volume, and greater right thalamic size (subjects were right handed), were associated with more sleep problems among CFS patients – but not controls. Sleep structure and sleepiness in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with or without co-existing Fibromyalgia – Source: Arthritis Research & Therapy, May 2008
A subset of ME/CFS patients was identified who are more sleepy/fatigued in the morning vs. a less sleepy subset. Polysomnograms indicated the more-sleepy symptom was associated with more-disrupted sleep - and not co-existing Fibromyalgia, RLS, sleep apnea, or different menstrual phase.
