Antioxidants – What They Are and Why We Need Them
When the body's "front line antioxidants" absorb an electron from a free radical they are neutralized, but they re-activate themselves by passing that electron back to "second line antioxidants," which in turn pass it to the vitamin that is the "ultimate repository of electrons." |

Orthostatic Intolerance: What It Is, Diagnosis, Coping Tips, Research Centers and Trials
If you have problems such as lightheadedness when rising to a standing position or when standing, you may have orthostatic intolerance. This is common in ME/CFS and FM, and is an umbrella term for a group of blood pressure/heart rate regulation dysfunctions with many possible symptoms. |

Increased oxidative stress suggested by low serum vitamin E concentrations in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome – Source: International Journal of Cardiology, Aug 4 2008
Lower blood levels of the antioxidant vitamin E are typical of those with coronary risk factors; but among ME/CFS patients, even those with no risk factors have significantly lower vit E levels, implying they have greater oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by free radicals breaking down the integrity of cells unless neutralized by antioxidants. [Source: International Journal of Cardiology, Aug 4, 2008] |

Fibromyalgia syndrome: A relevant recent construction of an ancient condition? - Source: Current Opinion in Supportive and Palliative Care, Jun 2008
“The level of scientific data collected on this recently described condition should convince clinicians of the existence of this syndrome, allowing improved management of the many patients suffering from chronic pain.” [Source: Current Opinion in Supportive and Palliative Care, Jun 2008] |

Treating chronic fatigue states as a disease of the regulation of energy metabolism - Source: Medical Hypotheses, online Aug 5, 2008
Hypothesis: Physiological “insults” can result in reduced renin-angiotensin system and sympathetic nervous system activity (stress response regulation), a decrease in number of the cell’s energy-generating mitochondria (so each works closer to capacity than is normal) and inability to sustain high power output levels. “If correct, this means that chronic fatigue syndrome can be successfully treated with RAS agonists” (RAS stimulating drugs). Post-radiation syndrome as a NO/ONOO(-) cycle, chronic fatigue syndrome-like disease - Source: Medical Hypotheses, Jul 29, 2008
Could exposure to ionizing radiation initiate chronic fatigue syndrome? A dysregulated nitric oxide/peroxynitrite cycle – which Dr. Pall proposes is a hallmark of chronic fatigue syndrome & other “unexplained” illnesses – appears to play a role in post-radiation syndrome, which has the same symptoms and signs as CFS. Prefrontal cortex oxygenation during incremental exercise in chronic fatigue syndrome - Source: Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging, Jul 29, 2008
CFS patient testing identifies reduced blood supply and oxygen delivery to brain during exercise vs. controls – “may contribute to the reduced exercise load in CFS, and supports the contention that CFS, in part, is mediated centrally” (in the central nervous system). Small Heart Syndrome in Patients with Chronic fatigue Syndrome – Source: Clinical Cardiology, July 2008
In this study, small heart syndrome was more prevalent in CFS patients (61%) than the control group (24%). Researchers hypothesize it "may contribute to the development of CFS as a constitutional factor predisposing to fatigue, and may be included in the genesis of CFS."
