After being diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM), many people don’t know which way to turn. The flurry of concerns, questions, emotions, and doubts can sometimes become overwhelming. Getting help from your family, friends, or local support groups can sometimes make all the difference in the world and guide you through your new journey.

In a completed study, the effects of social support on the health and well being of fibromyalgia (FM) sufferers was tested. Six hundred adults diagnosed with FM were recruited from a large health maintenance organization (HMO). Subjects were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups. The first group met with other FM sufferers for 2 hours every week for 10 weeks, and then monthly for an additional 10 months. The second group also had 10, 2-hour weekly meetings followed by 10 monthly meetings with other FM sufferers. Its members were taught about the disease and self-management techniques. The control group participated in the 5 assessment periods only.

All three groups were assessed before being assigned to a group, after the intervention, and for yearly follow-ups. At this time, no study results have been published.

This study was conducted by San Diego State University.
