Despite extensive research on fibromyalgia (FM), the cause and condition itself are still not well understood. To date, no treatment has been shown universally effective on FM sufferers. But in a study conducted by the University of Washington, matching specific characteristics of FM patients to specific treatment is being examined.
Researchers will operate under the theory that FM is a complex disorder involving multiple factors – both physical and psychosocial-behavioral and the study will evaluate the effects of matching treatment to subgroups of FM patients based on these factors. Specifically, the study will evaluate the different responses of patients given a general rehabilitation program that includes FM education and physical therapy emphasizing aerobic conditioning, pacing, and body mechanics. This general rehabilitation treatment will be combined either with cognitive-behavioral pain management therapy, interpersonal skill training, or supportive counseling.
The second aim of the study is to better understand the variations of FM symptoms and the change in symptoms as a result of treatment in the natural environment.
A total of 312 FM patients and a control group will record moods, thoughts, symptoms, activities, and levels of fatigue 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Patients will continue to record these variables for 2 weeks following treatment. Palm-top computers will be used to obtain "real-time" assessments, permitting ratings in process rather than in retrospect.
Overall, the results of these studies should establish the benefit of matching treatments to subject characteristics, and provide researchers with a better understanding of the roles of cognitive-affective-behavioral adaptation of FM patients.
