European Pain Killer Tested for Fibromyalgia Treatment

Researchers in Europe are testing a new pain killer to determine how useful it will be in treating fibromyalgia (FM) pain.

Tropistron is unique because it is not an opioid, a synthetic form of narcotic. Instead Tropistron adjusts serotonin levels and substance P, which is a peptide found in the brain that plays a role in the function of nervous and immune systems.

In the study, one group using the drug recorded definitive decreases in pain levels. However, the researchers are quick to point out that further studies will need to be conducted to see exactly how Tropistron works on pain and when it should be administered.

Tropistron was originally examined as a treatment for cancer pain. In that study, even the smallest dose of Tropistron had a significant impact on reducing pain scores.

Currently the drug is only available in Europe.
