New Advisory Board Members Announced

by Source: Health Watch
January 1, 1997

Healthwatch is pleased to announce the addition of three distinguished doctors to our Scientific Advisory Board; Dr. Jay Goldstein, M.D., University of Pittsburgh, Dr. William Maguire, M.D., Harvard, Ph.D., New York Medical College (pharmacology), and Dr. R. Paul St. Amand, M.D., Tufts University School of Medicine.

These accomplished specialists bring invaluable experience and insight to the newly formed advisory board and will assist Healthwatch in bringing the most pertinent information on Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) and Fibromyalgia (FM) to your attention in a timely and accurate manner.

Dr. Jay Goldstein, considered one of the world's foremost experts in the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is the author of numerous research articles on CFIDS and Fibromyalgia and is the founder and director of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome institute. Dr. Goldstein has an extensive background in psychopharmacology and has served as a faculty member at the Department of psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine. He has also served on the staff of five hospitals in the southern California area.

Currently, Dr. Goldstein's research is primarily concerned with the characterization of CFS as a disorder of the limbic system, a part of the brain with numerous regulatory functions. He believes "Inappropriate secretion of transforming growth factor beta is one major problem in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)." Additional research focuses on the sleep deprivation that occurs in patients with CFS and Fibromyalgia.

Dr. Goldstein has published several books on CFS including Betrayal by the Brain: The Neurobiologic Basis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Related Disorders, Could Your Doctor be Wrong? and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The Struggle for Health.

Dr. William Maguire was a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow at Beth Israel and Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard University. He is currently in private practice, specializing in critical care and pulmonary disease.

Dr. Maguire has a Ph.D. in pharmacology from New York Medical College and an M.D. from Harvard. He sees a shift toward the emphasis of prevention in the health care system today and believes that the news and media attention given to research on vitamins, herbs, and nutritional supplements is making a tremendous impact on attitudes towards health care.

Dr. R. Paul St. Amand has spent much of his medical career (over 35 years) focussing on arthritis and Fibromyalgia. He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. St. Amand has published several reports on the use of Guaifenesin, a simple cough expectorant that he uses to help treat the symptoms of Fibromyalgia.

Dr. St. Amand has a current appointment to the Department of Endocrinology as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is also the medical advisor for the Seattle Fibromyalgia Society.
