Did Ken Cox Cure His Fibromyalgia? He not only says he did, but wrote a book about how.
In his book, Fibromyalgia: How I Fully Recovered, he traces the symptoms that finally led to his diagnosis and his holistic treatment approach that he claims cured him. Not that he doesn't expect people to be skeptical. "I owe this to people…I don't need the money. I did this because I care about people. What kind of person would I be if I kept it to myself?"
His progression toward diagnosis reads familiarly: he began clenching his jaw and grinding his teeth; he felt tingling from his feet up through his legs and back and head; muscles began to tear and ache; he wasn't sleeping well. Not surprisingly, tests showed that his legs and brain were fine. Only by accident did Ken find out what these illusive symptoms meant: in his wife's business office he found a list of fibromyalgia's symptoms, which matched his own. After diagnosis, Ken was not content to "manage" the disease -- he wanted a cure.
What followed was a complete examination of his life and a courageous willingness to make whatever changes – emotional, physical and spiritual – that were necessary. He soaked in hot water and vinegar baths to relieve tension. He stopped eating by 6 p.m. each day so that his body could rest fully during the night, rather than use energy for digestion. He drank more water and eliminated caffeine from his diet. He consulted with nutritionists and found the foods that his body could not tolerate – they too, were eliminated. He fearlessly looked at his emotional well-being and admitted he was "burning the candle at both ends" as well as holding on to lingering bitterness over divorce, and other events in his past. He was treated by a naturopathic physician who prescribed Mexican yam, pig's thyroid and minerals, which Ken says, "absolutely changed my life."
Considered to have "beaten" the illness, Ken, now 58, says that he feels better now than when he was 40. "I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I've learned to live healthier."
