Physical Effort Does Not Automatically Lead to Worsening of Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Recent research has examined the altered function of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) as part of the cause of fibromyalgia (FM). However, conflicting opinions of the SNS role exists because studies have found SNS hyperactivity and reduced activity in FM patients. What is consistent in these studies is that the SNS responses of subjects with fibromyalgia undertaken during exercise indicated a blunted response.

No Link Between Bronchial Hyperresponsiveness, RNase L Ratio in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients

A CFS-related change in the body’s antiviral pathway appears not to be responsible for the high percentage of CFS patients with bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), according to new research from Belgium.

Tips From an Attorney: Win Your Disability Case by Obtaining Your Personnel File From Work

Disability attorney Scott E. Davis writes, "Remember, in a disability claim, you should always try to have another independent source corroborating the story about your trials and tribulations which led to your inability to work. Affidavits are one source of evidence, and I encourage you to view your personnel file as another means to this end."

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: Yeast and Fungi

Like weeds in a lawn, pathogenic fungi and yeasts (single-celled fungi) can invade and overtake our bodies. In people with healthy immune systems, cells called macrophages and neutrophils engulf these pathogens, nipping them in the bud. But when the immune system is weakened by disease or drugs, fungi – much like weeds in your garden, can grow unchecked.

Researchers at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research take a broad-based approach to the study of pathogenic yeasts and fungi, combining new genomic approaches and genetic techniques to boost scientists' knowledge of how fungal pathogens infect human, animal and plant hosts.

One key area of this research focuses on the mechanisms that enable yeasts such as Candida albicans to switch between two different forms. Like other yeasts, they multiply through cell division, or grow as filaments. "This ability to exist in two different forms give fungi a real advantage and flexibility to deal with immune systems," says researcher Robert T. Wheeler.
