The federally funded trial will last 9 months and will be conducted by clinical investigators within the Medical School’s Division of Rheumatology.
It reflects current thinking that the brain or spinal cord of FM patients is revved up to heighten pain perception, and that involvement in activities to improve stress management, sleep, nutrition, and physical fitness may “produce something in the blood” that will reduce perceived pain.
Patients up to age 66 who have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, preferably by a rheumatologist, will be assigned randomly either to a program emphasizing motivation or to a program emphasizing education.
The trial will involve an initial onsite consultation with a fitness instructor, 4 onsite outcome assessments over 36 weeks, and six phone support sessions, each focusing on a different topic.
